Dosatron
Dosatron International has joined the Water Education Alliance for Horticulture. In this new partnership, Dosatron will participate in the Water Education Alliance’s water quality and treatment workshops. Created by Dr. Paul Fisher, the Water Education Alliance for Horticulture is a partnership of universities and companies with the goal of helping growers use water in an efficient and sustainable manner through increased knowledge of water technologies.
BASF Turf & Ornamentals
BASF Turf & Ornamentals has appointed Wayne Ducote as Sales Specialist for Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, the Florida panhandle region and Tennessee. Wayne will assist distributors, golf course superintendents, nursery and greenhouse growers and lawn care operators with their science-based, chemical solutions needs. In addition, BASF also announced that Dan Watts, Strategic Accounts Manager for BASF Professional Vegetation Management has added similar responsibilities for BASF Turf & Ornamentals.
Ball Wins EPA Award
Ball Horticultural Company has been awarded the 2008 Conservation and Native Landscaping Award for its work on the Ball Ecological Restoration Project in West Chicago, Illinois. The project began in 2001 and has grown to 27 acres of native restoration. This award is sponsored by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and Chicago Wilderness, which recognizes park districts, municipalities and corporations that make extensive and creative use of native landscaping.
Klupengers Nursery
Klupengers Nursery, Aurora, Oregon, has appointed Curt Meike as its sales representative for the central states. He will be responsible for customers in Ohio, northern New York and selected accounts in adjacent territories. Klupengers is a grower and marketer of woody ornamental plants purchased mainly by independent garden centers and re-wholesalers.
Syngenta Scholarship
Syngenta Professional Products is accepting applications for the Syngenta Grower of Tomorrow 2009 internship program. The scholarship is open to students pursuing degrees in agronomy or horticulture from 28 select universities in the U.S. The first-place winner of the Syngenta Grower of Tomorrow will receive a $2,500 scholarship and a paid internship based at Syngenta North American headquarters in Greensboro, N.C. Two runner-up finalists will each receive a $1,000 scholarship. Interested students should contact the department chair or a faculty member at their university to request an application.
Aquascape
Aquascape has appointed Blake Barry national sales manager. Blake will be responsible for managing Aquascape’s nationwide sales force and programs. He most recently served as National Sales Manager for Prevue Pet Products.
Ball Horticultural Company
Ball received two Gold awards for its booth presentation at the International Horti Fair Exhibition in the Amsterdam RAI. The awards were in the bedding plant and cut flower presentation categories.
Georgia Green Industry Association
The Georgia Green Industry Association has hired Chris Butts in the role of Director of Legislative, Environmental and Public Affairs. Chris’ responsibilities will include monitoring legislative and environmental issues in Georgia as well as working with stakeholders from other industries.
Horticultural Research Institute
HRI, the research division of the American Nursery & Landscape Association (ANLA) recently awarded several scholarships for 2008.
• Amanda Rosa, a senior at California Polytechnic State University received the $1,500 Usrey Family Scholarship, which is awarded annually to horticulture students enrolled in a California state university or college.
• Gerrit Shuffstall, a landscape architecture graduate student at Morgan State University, received the $4,000 Carville M. Akehurst Memorial Scholarship, which memorializes a founder of MANTS.
• Ryan Contreras, a University of Georgia horticulture graduate student, received the $2,500 Spring Meadow Scholarship.
• Kayla Harrison, a senior at the University of Rhode Island, received the $2,500 Timothy and Palmer Bigelow Jr. Scholarship
• Kaythryn Sanford, a graduate student at The Pennsylvania University, received the $1,500 Muggets Scholarship, given annually by the Mugget Growers of America.
