Earlier this month, I had a nice, long chat with friend, horticultural consultant, author, teacher and so much more (artist, too!), Leslie Halleck. She’s recently made the move from Dallas, Texas, to the Portland, Oregon, area and is loving the change. I also got the scoop on her latest book, “Home Greenhouse Revival: Growing Year-Round Foliage, Flowers and Food.” 

The intent of this book is to demystify greenhouse growing for every level, whether it’s folks who are nurturing orchids, raising winter greens or building a full-season food‑production setup. Interest in erecting and using greenhouses at the home level is surging—perhaps you’ve noticed yourself—and this book offers timely, accessible and expert-driven guidance. Leslie’s specialty!

I asked Leslie why she was excited to tackle the topic of home greenhouses. “The way that I approached this book was very plant-centric,” she said. “As a horticulturist, I’ve included a lot of very specific growing information, such as specific photo periods, your fertilizer PPMs, environmental and the like. So, really, somebody who is even a commercial grower can use this book. Whether you’re a first-timer and you haven’t put in a greenhouse yet, or you have one and you’re struggling with it, or you understand your greenhouse, but you don’t understand how to grow specific plants or crops, then that’s what this book is for.”

In other words, this is not an influencer-written book, but one backed by research and hard science for those who are serious about succeeding with their home greenhouse.
